OUR MATERIALS

Every SENTIENT product is crafted with the best performing  and sustainable vegan leather alternatives available, carefully selected to avoid harm to animals. We work with leather alternatives that honor the responsible use of natural resources awarded to us by our shared planet.

A LEAP OF INNOVATION
MIRUM®

MIRUM® is truly sustainable innovation: it is 100% natural & 100% bio-based & bioneutral. It is the first material of its kind designed to be 100% naturally circular: it can return to the earth as nutrients for future growth at the end of its life.

MIRUM® is made of cork, charcoal, coconut husk, soybean oil and natural rubber, ingredients that are then combined and shaped into sheets. It completely avoids any use of plastics, and emits 10x less CO2  than traditional chrome tanned leather.

FROM MEXICO WITH LOVE
DESSERTO®

In the state of Zacatecas in Mexico, Desserto® grows the cacti to create this sustainable and vegan leather in a fully organic plantation, meaning there are no pesticides or herbicides used in its harvest. The cactus plantation is USDA-certified organic.

By working with native cacti in the region, the plantation matches biodiversity and blends with wild flora. The harvesting techniques used stimulate the microflora and microfauna in the ground which are maintained without damage, and wildlife like hawks find a favorable environment that provides food.

Irrigation systems are not needed since cacti grow with rainwater and earth minerals (which are rich in Zacatecas). The leather's water footprint is considerably lower than other alternatives and animal leather. It only takes 200 liters to grow one kilogram of cactus biomass with the water that is naturally absorbed by the plant itself from humidity present in the atmosphere.

Finally, cactus is a natural carbon sink, it has a great carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestering capacity. From the plantation's 14 acres, 8,100 tons of CO2/year are absorbed, while only 15.30 tons of CO2 are generated annually.

A BAMBOO RENAISSANCE

Nestled in China's lush landscapes, Anji County boasts a robust bamboo industry, where the cultivation and processing of bamboo are central to the region. In these bamboo-rich locales, processing workshops routinely manage up to 20 tons of bamboo waste each month. This byproduct is not merely discarded but is ingeniously recycled and converted into bio-based, water-based vegan leather.

Thanks to its water-based nature, the production of this bamboo leather avoids pollution of the air or land, embodying our dedication to minimizing environmental impact. This process not only utilizes waste but also transforms it into a material that is both practical and beautiful

Certified with the Global Recycled Standard, recycled bamboo leather is a means to promote circularity in fashion.

FROM WASTE TO FRUITFUL BEAUTY

Apple leather is a pioneering bio-based material crafted from the residual pomace and peels of apples, byproducts of the fruit juice and compote industries in Northern Italy. Here, after the apples are pressed for juice, the remaining peels are not discarded but given a new life.

These apple peels are finely ground into a powder, which is then combined with non-toxic, organic pigments to produce the exceptional apple leather. This innovative process embodies our commitment to sustainability through the principles of REUSE, REDUCE, and RECYCLE—reusing organic waste, reducing greenhouse gases, and recycling water and chemicals in a way that minimizes our footprint and usage of finite natural resources.

Certified as a USDA Biobased Product, apple leather is at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the industry.

STRAIGHT FROM THE OLIVE GROVE

Oleatex is a pioneering plant-based vegan leather crafted from upcycled olive pomace—the pulp, skins, and pits left over from olive oil production. This innovative material exemplifies circular design by diverting agricultural waste from landfills and transforming it into a luxurious, high-quality alternative to traditional leather. With a 94% reduction in carbon emissions and 93% less water usage compared to cow leather, Oleatex represents a significant step forward in reducing the fashion industry’s environmental footprint.
